Information on appraisal books and book reviews

How to use appraisal books
If you're new to appraising a property type, a book is just a starting point. You need to contact other appraisers with more experience. But reading a book before contacting them is best, as then they don't have to waste a lot of time on the "basics."
Books on specific types of properties, such as Healthcare Facilities, has market information that is out of date the day they are published. Use the resources listed in the book, and your own research for current market data. But the appraisal principles and techniques have not change.
The Internet is an excellent way to get more information, and updated information for an older book. Use the book to search for web sites of trade associations, government agencies, and other resources listed in the book.

About the reviewer
The reviewer, Ann O'Rourke, is a practicing appraiser. Like all appraisers, she doesn't appraise every type of property. When she lacks experience in appraising a property type that is the subject of a book
, she contacts other appraisers with experience for feedback.

Where to get information on other appraisal books
This web site only has part of the appraisal books in publication. The best place to search for books is at www.amazon.com. Search for a topic, such as "appraising mobile home parks." Most books are published by appraisal associations. Go to the Appraisal Publications page or the Appraisal Associations page.

For a complete list of all Appraisal Institute books (including those published prior to 1994, go to www.appraisalinstitute.org/pubs/

Where to get articles
Books get out of date fast, and there may be no book on your topic. Go to www.northernlight.com, and excellent resource for published articles. The Appraisal Institute's Lum Library is online and is a great place to search.

What if you're in a very big rush and "must" have the book tomorrow?
Call the publisher directly and ask for overnight shipping, if available!

Where to get more reviews
Steven Traub has some reviews of commercial appraisal books at www1.shore.net/~straub/greatpub.htm

The Appraisal Institute has brief summaries of their books on their web site. For a complete list of all Appraisal Institute books , go to www.appraisalinstitute.org/pubs/

A few appraisal books are reviewed on Amazon.com.

How books are rated on this Web site

  • 5 star - "must have," creative with new ideas
  • 4.5 star - almost made it to the 5 star
  • 4 star - well written and practical.
  • 3.5 star - I couldn't decide between a 3 and a 4 star
  • 3 star - useful, but older, very short, etc.
  • 1 or 2 star - if they aren't very good, I just don't review them!
